Crybaby Mermaid (泣き虫マーメイド) is the illustrated memoir of Yuumi Uotani, a professional mahjong player in Japan's top league. Written by Yoshiki Suda with art by Mio Junta, the manga follows Uotani through the early stretch of her career when she was losing more than winning and couldn't stop wondering if she belonged at the table. Not the victories. The long, uncertain months between them.
If you don't know Uotani: she won the 39th 10th Dan Tournament (Jūdan, 十段戦) as the first woman to ever take that title. She won the 44th King's Tournament (Ōi, 王位戦), the oldest title in Japanese professional mahjong, as only the second woman to do it. M-League MVP in 2019-20. First female champion of the 2023 Mahjong Japan Series. She's written four strategy books in Japan, including The Fastest Way to Get Strong at Modern Mahjong (ゆーみんの現代麻雀が最速で強くなる本), Heart and Technique for Getting Strong at Mahjong (麻雀が強くなるための心と技術), and Pro Techniques for Push-Fold in Mahjong (麻雀 押し引きのプロ技, co-authored with Shō Shiratori). Her pro nickname is "the Fastest Mermaid" (最速マーメイド). This manga is about before she earned it.
